Because a high caliber music education is an indicator of long-term success, we provide 4th-6th grade students in the Bronx with after-school music programs one day a week that include: general music, choir, and music technology.

Students explore their self-identity and learn to love who they are. They are encouraged to recognize the importance of their cultural background, the history of where they come from and where they live, and celebrate their identity through music. Students must first value their own identity and what makes them unique before learning to appreciate the uniqueness of others.
Students are introduced to music from various cultures within a climate of respect that recognizes similarities and differences among peer groups. Activities are tailored to include acceptance of the diversity within the music room, and breaks down stereotypes and biases to encourage a welcoming creative space for students to grow. Students become knowledgeable of the crucial skills of showing empathy, kindness, and inclusivity that benefits their overall social-emotional intelligence.
Through engaging lessons, awareness is brought to the social injustices and social movements that have shaped the course of music and world history. Students will explore songs of protest, gain insight on important historical knowledge of music’s origins, and make connections with critical topics addressed in their general content classrooms. They will address issues that disproportionately and directly affect them, and engage in democratic discussions in which the student voice is elevated.
Students are encouraged to become advocates for their classroom, school, community, and most importantly, themselves. Along side their teachers, students will use music as their form of protest. Learners will take on the role of activist and brainstorm ways in which their community can be improved. Students will strive to engage the community to invoke positive change with the assistance of teachers, who work as community organizers.
